New Release spotlight: The Sea Wife by Naomi Clark

Please welcome Naomi Clark to the M&M blog to talk about her new Evernight release, The Sea Wife!

It's probably no secret that I love shapeshifters, but normally I stick with werewolves. What can I say, I'm a traditionalist when it comes to these things! For THE SEA WIFE though, I branched out. It's impossible to be a fan of folklore and mythology and not know about selkies. There are loads of different stories surrounding these seal shifters, but I think probably the best-known is the idea that, if a man steals a seal-woman's skin, she's trapped and forced to become his wife. It's a sad story, but then, romantic tragedy seems to be a key element of selkie lore.

In THE SEA WIFE, I wanted to play on that element, but hopefully you won't find Charley and Nessa's story too sad! I like a little hope and happiness in my love stories after all!

THE SEA WIFE

Charley and Nessa are from two different worlds. Nessa is a selkie and Charley is all too human. When selkies and humans fall in love, tragedy can follow. For Charley and Nessa, that never seems to matter when they're together. But when Nessa's seal skin is stolen, the lovers uncover all the reasons humans and selkies should stay in their separate worlds.

EXCERPT

In seconds, Nessa was up on the ledge beside her, and Charley pulled her into her arms to kiss her fiercely. Nessa tasted of sea spray and sunlight, her long dark hair smelt of sea lavender, and her body fit perfectly against Charley’s, just as it always had. Now Charley was truly home.
They didn’t need words to greet each other, not really. They’d been meeting in this cave since Charley was fifteen. They’d been kissing since she was sixteen. Nessa slid her hands into Charley’s hair, freeing the messy red waves from the loose knot she’d tied them in. Nessa’s fingers trailed down Charley’s throat as they kissed, then down to grab the hem of Charley’s t-shirt. They broke the kiss briefly so Nessa could pull the t-shirt off and toss it aside. She fumbled with Charley’s bra, as she always did, and Charley giggled, as she always did, and slipped it off for Nessa. That too, was tossed away carelessly.
Charley skimmed her hands down Nessa’s bare back, relishing the little shivers she caused. She pushed away Nessa’s heavy locks and kissed the curve of her neck, licking drops of seawater from her skin while Nessa cupped Charley’s breasts and ran her fingers round her nipples. Charley sighed, burying her face in Nessa’s hair and soaking up her light, delicate touches. They’d been apart too long and she needed Nessa with an urgency that wouldn’t settle for light or delicate. She slid her arms round Nessa’s waist and pushed her to the blanket. She stood quickly, hopping like an idiot to kick her jeans off, and Nessa watched her with barely-contained laughter.
“If you just didn’t bother with clothes at all…”
“I’d be arrested for public indecency and you’d never see me again.” Charley dropped to her knees beside Nessa, trailing her fingers over Nessa’s stomach and down between her legs.

About the Author
Naomi likes writing, perfume, fancy tea, and unfathomable monsters from the dark spaces between the stars, not necessarily in that order. She has been writing stories ever since she learned how to write, but is still trying to master the art of biography writing. When she's not dealing with werewolves, demons, or sea monsters, she's hanging out with her cat and probably watching a documentary about Bigfoot. If the cat isn't available, she's with her fiancé watching cookery shows and silently plotting her next book.

The perfect shade of lipstick can lead to the perfect opportunity for sin…

When living-challenged author Claire Presswood gets invited to go on a night out on the town with her two best friends, she isn't prepared for the evening that awaits her. Hungry and overworked, she arrives at a masked party at an art museum in time to meet debonair artist Maxwell Douglas. One look from his luminous eyes and Claire knows this will be a night to remember.

Be Warned: light BDSM, spanking, sex toys

EXCERPTS:

Nice:

“What do you think? Does this lipstick make me look fat?” I eyed the mirror and mushed my lips into a moue.

“Oh my God, Claire.” Rachel rolled her eyes and snorted. “Fat? Really?” She smoothed on a shade of cranberry red that looked dazzling with her preternaturally enhanced olive skin. The girl made being a vampire look good.

I gave her a thumb’s up.

“Yes. Fat. Come on, guys. I need something different. Nothing too…edgy.”

“Edgy, huh?” Carmen snickered, her kitty shifter cattiness coming into play. The Latin beauty grinned. “You should be worried about it making you look dead.”

Carmen sauntered over to the makeup counter where we were trying on new shades of lipstick and selected a tube, twisting it open. She grimaced and shoved it back. “Some of these…ugh. You might as well be trying out for the circus. Why don’t you try something a little more drastic? Like this one?” She lifted up a black tube and opened it to reveal a shade of purplish brown that I loved.

“Sin” was one of the hottest colors around. I actually had it in my makeup bag at home, but tonight wasn’t about scaring up a bondage partner. It was more about having a normal night out with the girls.

“I already have that one. Too leather club. I want human. Natural.”

Carmen snorted and twirled a finger in her hair. “Honey, I love you, but one thing you are not is human.”

“Bitch.” I turned my head from side to side. Nope. The earthy shade was appealing and didn't make me appear like a candidate for the coroner’s office.

Score!

“Maybe, but you know I’m right. Can’t have you going to the party looking like a zombie now, can we?”

“Ha ha.” The comment stung, but Carmen did have a point. With my complexion, if I got something too red,

I’d look like I’d just eaten someone’s face off. Something too light? Postmortem ice queen with no color at all. Finding the right lipstick was an art and apparently a forensic science.

“All right, fang girl. Are you ready yet? Because I am.” Carmen poked Rachel in the back with her long red fingernail and smirked. “The party is going to be over and all the hot guys taken before you get your vampire ass out of that chair.”

Naughty:

“What would you like to see first?” Maxwell's eyes resumed their fiery trail down my body.

“How about that spanking bench?” I smiled, letting him lead the way.

He led me to it and I leaned forward onto the padded seat, deliberately giving him a stellar view of my backside. Rachel was right about the dress. It was perfect.

“Is this right?” I feigned ignorance, waggling my ass in the air.

He moved behind me and as I arched my back in a provocative pose. He sucked in his breath. “Yes. I'd say that's just about perfect.” He pressed his erection against my ass, grinding it against me.

I moaned deep in my throat, sure that this had to be some kind of dream. Moisture pooled in my slit and hunger clawing at my insides. A low keening growl escaped my lips and I froze.

Bad zombie.

He reached around and kissed me, his breath falling short as he took in the slight glow of my eyes.

“Exactly.” He opened my mouth, sliding his tongue against mine, urging me to respond.

I accepted the challenge, savoring his mouth. His scent was earthy and his essence made me want to devour him.

He broke the kiss and leaned back, his gaze meeting mine.

“God, my palm itches to spank you,” he breathed, reaching for an errant curl that had fallen across my face.

“You are intoxicating.”

I took his hand and placed it on my breast, eager and more than ready. I turned in his arms and pushed my ass alongside the erection straining against his trousers. I imagined it inside me, pressing in even closer.

“I want you,” I breathed.

“Well then, there is just one little thing we need to remedy.” Maxwell's voice was low as he ran his hand in a light trail down my spine.

“Really? What's that?” I shivered as his hand traced lines down my body.

“The dress. It has to go.”

“Ummm.” I lifted my arm and his hand found the zipper. As he slowly moved it down, the dress loosened and he pulled it over my head. Clad in the thong, lacy-topped black thigh-highs, and shiny black stilettos, the chill of the room had fine goosebumps erupting all over my skin. My nipples pebbled with the delicious blend of cold and desire and maybe just a little fear. This man could do anything to me and who was to say the woman in his pictures upstairs was even alive?

The danger sped up my heart and made my juices flow.

While each story I create is close to my heart, I've decided to share the first book from my Paranormal romance series, Forever Faerie, FAERIE FATE.  The series was born of a love of paranormal romance, and my desire to try my hand at the genre. I was tired of vampires and werewolves, so I decided to explore the world of fae and all the different meanings of love.

Holly Spencer is a 22-year-old IT major who’s ready to graduate and find her place in the world. What she really wants is a good job and a condo with a view.

But when she’s rescued twice in one day by a mysterious man who claims to be a fae warrior, she’s plunged into a world she grew up believing existed only in fairy tales, and is forced to run for her life from warring factions who all want her dead.

Shadow’s on a routine mission when he runs headlong into Holly—the soul mate he’d given up on ever finding. Even when she refuses to believe they’re meant for each other, he fights to protect her from the very thing that brought them together, even when it means making a dangerous deal with Fate to save her life.

Excerpt:

She still had to face the things that caused her fear, and as much as Shadow made her feel safe, she couldn’t quite let go of the responsibility of taking care of herself. She couldn’t in good conscience give him any hope when she had no idea what she faced in the next few days. That kind of trust required more than she was ready to give just yet. Still, resisting the temptation to give in to their attraction was becoming more and more difficult.
“I know you’ll do everything you can to protect my life, and if I survive this mission, we can talk about my heart,” she said, resting her head on his chest.
“You’ll survive,” he said. “I’ve already saved you twice. I’ll do it as many times as I need to.”
“As I recall, the last time it was a team effort,” Holly teased. “If I hadn’t shifted form, you wouldn’t have been able to carry me away.”
She heard his laugh rumble in his chest. “Very true. That just proves what a good team we are.” He pushed her back just a little to look her in the eyes, “And as I recall,” he said, a wicked grin spreading slowly across his lips, “the last time I saved you, you wore nothing but a smile. Is that going to be a habit?”
“You wish. What does that have to do with anything anyway?”
Still holding her close, he traced the line of her dress, down one shoulder, across the valley between her breasts, and back up again, making her shiver.
“Nothing. I was just thinking how impressive it was.”

Book Blurb

Danielle’s got three months to make her Grandmother’s rundown Craftsman house livable. Her game plan is to get in, get grubby, and get back home to L.A. She needs a carpenter, and her best friend’s younger brother is a good one. It’s hard to ignore the buffed body under Ryan’s paint-splattered sweatshirts, but her friend declares he’s off-limits so Danielle reluctantly agrees.

Ryan doesn’t have the cleanest record, anyway. His recently ex-ed girlfriend wants him back, and he has a reputation for brawling. He’s also had a crush on Danielle since he was a kid. Despite their nine-year age difference, he knows she’s worth pursuing.

Soon the paint under Danielle’s fingernails starts feeling more natural than the L.A. sunshine. She’ll have to navigate plumbing disasters, money problems, and one seriously cranky best friend to find something she hasn’t had before: a real home, and a man who loves her.

excerpt

The weather finally caught up with the calendar, and Tuesday afternoon Ryan drove across town in a steady downpour. It was almost dark when he pulled his truck into Danielle’s driveway. Under the glow of his headlights, her little car all but waggled its fingers at him. Sporty and flirty and fun, a Mini Cooper’s driver would never be accused of taking themselves too seriously.

He slammed the truck’s door. Chasing after Cherry hadn’t given Dani much reason to take him seriously either. At least she still wanted him to work on the house. The light was on so Ryan knocked once, then let himself in.

The house smelled smoky and the hearth was all wet, ringed with a rolled up log of soggy towels. Dani sat at the big cherry wood dining table, wearing her parka and a pair of gloves, arms crossed, chin down, gaze directed at a diagram on her laptop screen. File folders and paper, pens, and an oversized calculator surrounded her.

“We just got the paging operators on board with the new language. We can’t change it.” A woman’s voice came from the computer in a very cultured version of pissed off.

“But if the pediatricians can’t figure out what you want them to do,” a man said with a subtle Southern drawl, “they’ll keep on missing deliveries.”

The combination of a sharp exhale and a tiny shake of Dani’s head pretty much defined frustration. Ryan rounded the other side of the table, catching her eye as he passed behind the laptop.

“Conference call,” she mouthed.

Ryan jerked a thumb at the living room. "What the hell happened here?" he said, barely above a whisper.

"Don’t ask.” She murmured in response.

“Did you have something to add, Danielle?”

Whoever the woman was, she sure had her bitch voice on, and Danielle straightened up like she’d been caught napping. “No, Sharon, I’m sorry, my … uh … contractor just came in.”

“Oh good. Are you making progress, then?” Like flipping a switch, the woman came across as friendly and warm.

“So far so good. The electrician started this morning and the plumber comes next week.”

Ryan traced the laptop’s cord to a power strip, and from there to a ground adaptor connecting the power strip to the wall socket. Not a perfect set-up, but with a bit of luck, his buddy Dan would keep the electrical panel from catching fire.

“I’ll be in the kitchen,” he said.

She gave him a half-hearted wave and started writing on the clipboard in her lap.

In the kitchen, Ryan dumped his toolbox on the floor, pausing to watch Dani through the door. The floor lamp sent streaks of red-gold down her thick braid. The disembodied voices continued arguing about pediatricians and pagers, then moved on to an arcane discussion about a problem drawing blood from babies, a problem that was Dani’s to fix.

She hunched over the laptop, jaw tight, tapping the pencil on the clipboard and scrawling notes. The discussion turned into a complicated negotiation around how much she was willing to do from Seattle. She had an obvious commitment to her job, and made it plain her stay in Seattle would be limited. Ryan inhaled deeply and rocked his shoulders back and forth to loosen them. Her calm, professional tone did more than anything else to highlight their differences. Why would a woman who argued with doctors date a guy who hammered nails for a living? More importantly, why would a woman who was in town for a limited time get involved with someone who was too stupid to untwist himself from his ex-girlfriend?

No reason in the world.

If ever a man needed to kick his own ass... He pulled a small spiral notebook out of his jacket pocket, along with a stubby, flat, carpenter’s pencil and headed upstairs to look for leaks in the roof. It was better than bellyaching about what he couldn’t have.

Meet the Author

I write romance: m/f, m/m, and v/h, where the h is for human and the v is for vampire…or sometimes demon, and I lean more towards funny than angst. When I’m not writing I take care of tiny premature babies or teenagers, depending on whether I’m at home or at work. My husband is a soul of patience, my dog’s cuteness is legendary, and we share the homestead with three ferrets. Who steal things. Because they’re brats.
